Studies have shown that approximately two-thirds of the worldwide population suffer from headaches and unfortunately for about one-fifth of the population

Chiropractic Care to Relieve Headaches

search shows that spinal manipulation – one of the primary treatments provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. A 2014 report in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) found that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain and increased benefit was shown in several instances where a multimodal approach to neck pain had been used. Also, a 2011 JMPT study found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches.

Headaches are so common in many patients tension headaches show significant improvement through manipulation of the upper two cervical vertebrae, coupled with adjustments to the junction between the cervical and thoracic spine. This is also helpful in most cases of migraine headaches, as long as food and lifestyle triggers are avoided as well. Many headaches are triggered by weak neck flexors and forward head posture. During your visit Dr. Grainger will asses the muscles of the head and neck as well as cervical misalignments. Dr. Grainger also uses electrical stimulation of acupuncture points to help with headaches and even ear seeds.

Another study based on Washington state workers found that 42.7 percent of people who visited a surgeon first for work-related back pain eventually had surgery, compared to only 1.5 percent of those who visited a chiropractor first.

Types of Headaches

The most prevalent types of headaches include tension headaches, cervicogenic (neck) headaches, migraines and sinus headaches.  Cervicogenic headaches, which are the ones most seen at our clinic in Orange City,  are related to joint issues in the neck and are often linked back to problems such as poor posture, trauma or stress. Thankfully many of these causes can be removed with a specific treatment program that reduces or removes the underlying cause. A detailed breakdown of headache types in contained in our headache guide.

TMJ Headaches

Unfortunately, knowledge about the relationship between jaw dysfunction and headaches is not well known. Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from TMJ headaches, and they affect many more women than men (8:1). How does the jaw cause a headache? When you chew, your jaw muscles become tightened when you clench down.  Your jaw is positioned by the way your upper and lower teeth fit together.  If this position is misaligned then your jaw is in a constant strained position.  Over time, this incorrect position will put strain on the surrounding muscles, resulting in referred pain.  This referred pain can manifest itself through the head, neck, shoulders, ears and eyes.  If these surrounding muscles become stressed due to the misalignment, headaches and TMJ pain will increase.

Sinus headaches

These can usually be linked to an infection, inflammation or blockage of the sinuses.  Sinus headaches that are associated with allergies may include seasonal symptoms of hay fever such as congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose. It is always better to treat the cause rather than to ease the symptoms.

Cluster headaches

This headache affects less than one percent of the population and cause a very severe one-sided headache that is more common in men and occurs in cycles.  This type of headache is normally referred to as the ‘most severe headache’ that a patient has ever had. Sometimes this can be a more serious issue and it should be evaluated more urgently, in that this may be representative of a subarachnoid hemorrhage — a bleeding into a layer covering the brain. This requires urgent neurosurgical evaluation and drainage.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches seem to be the most prevalent of all types. They are usually the result of spine issues, or emotional stress and respond well with chiropractic care. Bad posture and ergonomically poor workplace situations can also worsen the condition.

Migraines

The most typical symptoms of migraines include throbbing pain, nausea or vomiting, and even sensitivity to sound or light. While the exact cause of migraines is still unknown, the evidence does suggest that it may be genetic. There is a broad range of known triggers for migraines. They include irregular sleeping or eating patterns, flashing lights, hormone fluctuations, loud noises, stress, and tiredness.

While spinal problems are not believed to be a major cause of the migraine attacks there is some level of scientific evidence that improved spinal function can reduce both the frequency and duration of migraines. This is why some patients suffering from migraines choose to have regular chiropractic care as part of their health care approach to migraine control and prevention. Further scientific research is needed to find the exact cause and effective treatment of migraines.

Cervicogenic (Neck) headaches

These are a very common form of headache which originates from the neck. Initially, pain may begin intermittently, spread to one side of the patient’s head, and become almost continuous. Whiplash, poor posture, or physical stresses like an ergonomically incorrect work environment can often set them off. This type of headache responds well to chiropractic care.
